California Approves Rule Phasing Out Gas-Powered Trucks and Buses

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) on Friday approved new regulations that will eventually remove all gas-powered trucks and buses from the state’s roads. In keeping with California’s zero-emission goals, the Advanced Clean Fleets rule will end sales of medium and heavy-duty combustion trucks in California by 2036. The rule sets benchmarks for the percentage of a fleet that must be zero-emission. For example:

  • Last mile delivery and yard truck fleets must be completely zero-emission by 2035
  • Work truck and day cab tractor fleets must be completely zero-emission by 2039
  • Sleeper cab trackers and specialty vehicles must be zero-emission by 2042
