National Safety Council Reports Increase in Motor Vehicle Deaths

The National Safety Council (NSC) released a preliminary report this week showing an increase in motor vehicle deaths in 2020, even as total vehicle miles travelled dropped drastically due to the pandemic. The report shows an 8% increase in motor vehicle deaths compared to 2019– the highest estimated year-over-year jump since 1924.

The report also estimated an additional 4.8 million people seriously injured due to motor vehicle crashes during 2020. These increases in deaths and injuries due to motor vehicle crash can potentially be attributed to a decline in road and infrastructure safety.

In light of these alarming statistics, the NSC is strongly urging President Joe Biden and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg to commit to infrastructure reform and zero roadway deaths by the year 2050.
