U.S. DOT Releases National Roadway Safety Strategy
The U.S. Department of Transportation released the 2022 National Roadway Safety Strategy this week. This zero-fatality road safety strategy is a series of rulemakings from the agency, some of which require state action.
One of the most heavily-anticipating rulemakings was a requirement to include automatic emergency braking systems on heavy-duty trucks. In 2020, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that forward-collision warnings and automatic emergency braking systems on heavy-duty trucks could prevent 2 out of 5 rear-end collisions.
The National Roadway Safety Strategy was met with praise upon its release by industry stakeholders, and is being viewed as a major shift in federal priorities for roadway safety.
