Car Rental Org Releases Findings on Vehicle Data Access and Cybersecurity

Two research papers, commissioned by the American Car Rental Association (ACRA), argue that the cybersecurity defenses of vehicle fleet owners would improve if fleet owners had direct and real-time access to the data generated by their vehicles.

The first article, titled, "Cybersecurity and the Connected Car," finds fault in a centralized vehicle data model. It states that such a model could "create a single point of failure, a performance bottleneck, and a target for attackers. Moreover, it can limit the flexibility and scalability of the network, as any changes or updates require approval and coordination from the central authority."

The second article, titled, "The Protected Connected Car," makes the case that direct vehicle data access allows fleet managers to "gather and utilize telemetry data from endpoints to develop tailored and robust security practices."
